As we are heading into the New Year and reflecting back on 2018, I would invite you to take stock on what type of leader you were this past year. Were you a coaching leader that empowered others to solve their own problems or were you a leader who solved for others? Knowing and applying the characteristics of a coaching leader can transform you, your team, and your organization.
Here are 3 things you can start implementing in 2019 to become an effective coaching leader:
- Ask Powerful Questions: A powerful question is an open ended question that is usually short in structure. Examples: Where are you in this? What have you tried? What part of this can you own.
- Listen: We are gifted with 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. Listening is defined as the conscious effort to hear. Are you consciously making the effort to hear what others are saying, or are you already thinking about your response to their message? You can’t listen effectively while thinking about your response. What is it going to take for you to hear someone’s full message in its entirety? What do you need to do be be a better listener?
- Seek to Understand: How many times do you make assumptions and act on those assumptions. Seeking to understand can take assuming out of the equation. Instead of assuming or making up your own meaning to what you hear or see, you can ask powerful questions to seek to understand where someone else might be coming from.
